In an interview with Scholastic Sachar talks about his book Holes. Sachar says that his inspiration for becoming an author is from reading and his favorite authors became his heroes. The way Sachar starts his books is by creating a character and lets it develop, but for Holes he stared with Camp Green Lake. The idea for the camp came from the hot long summers of Texas. Authors are not perfect writers, because as an author he has to do many drafts and even after he sends the copy to the publisher he still works with the editor to fix the copy some more. Even though his books do not have any thing of him he writes about what others were doing at the same time, like when he was a child how kids were interested in cigarettes. His advice he gives for children is to read and find out what interest them. Sachar was not always a writer he only liked reading and in college he was studying economics. He became interested in children when an elementary school kid was passing out leaflets for teachers’ aide, he took the job so he can get the credits he was missing for dropping classes in college.

Sachar is named in large magazines and newspapers by his books that he has written especially Small Steps which is a continuation of Sachar’s award winning book Holes. Time Magazine published an article in 2006 called “Books: 5 Great New Books” Louis Sachar was mentioned in the article for his book called Small Steps. Lev Grossman wrote about Sachar’s book, Small Steps, he said it is a continuation of the book Holes. Small Steps is about some two of the characters from Holes and how they get out of Camp Green Lake a camp designed to take place of going to jail for teenagers. New York Times published an article called “'Small Steps,' by Louis Sachar” it is over Sachar’s book Small Steps, A. O. Scott talks about the book, and says one of the characters from Holes Armpit tries to do the right thing and get his high school diploma. Armpit still gets into trouble when he sees his friend from Camp Green Lake, X-Ray. Scott says that both the kids are good, but get mistreated by people around them.

Sachar has written many books, but the book that inspired me to read is Holes. This book was kind of confusing at first, because it takes place in three different places. The main character Stanley Yelnats IV is sent to Camp Green Lake, his great-great grandfather in the 1800s and Kate Barlow a robber in the past. Sachar wrote many good books, enough that he has won many awards for his many books from the 1970s all the way to 2007. The book Holes was so good that a movie was made of the award winning book. He wrote books for young adults to children’s books. His writing career started with the series of books called Sideways Stories from Wayside School he wrote a total of thirty stories. The series of books were focused on young adults, he wrote the books from his experiences and that way he would relate to the readers. Sachar used names from his class when he was a teacher’s aide, and he would never use himself in the stories.

I used to never read a book or even a story, until I read Holes. My sister told me one day that she had bought me a gift I was so excited, until I found out it was a book, but not being mean I started to read the book. I found out that once I started reading I could not stop, I wanted to just keep reading to find out what happens next. That book was the only book I had ever wanted to read without my parents saying I had to read. Now after reading that book I read more now, I have the attitude of just give the book or story a chance it can get interesting. Everyone should give a book or story a chance even if it looks long, because there is a perfect book for every person and if they do not try to read one then they will never find it. Once someone gives a story or book a chance they will see things differently, even if they are like me that never reads. Even though they might not know what type of books they do not like if they try all types they will find the perfect one. I want to encourage people especially kids to read because they do not know what they are missing until they find a great book or an adventure the way I see it as.
